Experiment Title: Measurement in the Laboratory
Name: Chakia Brown
Lab Partner: Ta’Quil
Teacher: Mrs.Medina
Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to conduct six activities which were length, mass, volume, density, temperature, and concentration that is quantitatively measured.
Background: To understand data and make conclusions from them you must have accurate measurements for mass, volume, length, temperature, and density. You can examine things in the world quantitatively and qualitatively. Qualitatively describes attributes of an object and quantitatively describes measurements. To use the scientific method in labs they must be repeatable so you’re your information must be quantitatively in the correct SI units. SI units are made up of tens and you can change each by dividing or multiplying by ten. Length is where you measure an object from one end to another. The SI unit for length is Meter (m). Tools that you can measure length with are a meter stick, metric ruler, or tape. Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. The SI unit for volume is liters (L). Tools used for measuring volume are graduated cylinder, beaker, flask , and graduated pipet. Mass is the amount of matter an object takes up. The SI unit for mass is gram (g). A tool that is used to measure mass is a balance. Density is the amount of mass and object has contrasted to volume. The formula for density is mass divided by volume. Temperature is the measure of how hot or cold something is and is measured with a thermometer. The Si unit for temperature is Celsius.
Chemicals and Equipments: Red Food Dye 1ml, Isopropyl Alcohol 30ml, Sodium Chloride solution 30ml, balance, 3 Styrofoam cups, graduated cylinder 100ml, sunlight, marker, 5 medicine cups, metric ruler. Paper towels, graduated pipet, black sand, white sand, screw, clock, test tube, textbook, 2 thermometers, and water.
Procedure:
Activity 1 Measuring Length 1. Use ruler to measure length, width, and height 2. Record measurements in centimeters
Activity 2 Measuring Volume
Part A Direct Method 1. Fill test tube to top with water 2. Pour water in 100ml grad cylinder 3. Record volume to nearest millimeters
Part B Displacement Method 4. Fill 100ml grad cylinder to 50ml mark 5. Record initial volume in milliliters 6. Get screw put screw in grad cylinder 7. Record final volume in milliliters 8. Subtract initial volume by final volume and record the volume of the screw in milliliters
Activity 3 Measuring Mass 1. Styrofoam cup on balance 2. Record mass of Styrofoam in grams 3. Measure 100ML of water into Styrofoam cup 4. Subtract mass of cup from total mass record in grams
Activity 4 Determining Density 1. Record mass of Styrofoam cup in grams 2. Measure 30ml into Styrofoam cup 3. Record mass of water and cup 4. Subtract mass of cup from the total mass in grams 5. Discard water and dry cup with paper towels 6. Repeat steps 3-6 using 30 ml of salt water. Discard by teachers directions. 7. Repeat steps 3-6 using 30ml of isopropyl alcohol. Discard by teachers directions 8. Record all measurements
Activity 5 Measuring Temperature 1. Each group of lab partners will go outside and check the sand that Mrs. Medina placed outside 2. Record nearest 1.0 Celsius Degrees 3. Use stopwatch or clock to keep time
Activity 6 Measuring Low Concentrations of Water Pollutants 1. Go to cart and get medicine cups marked 1-5 2. Use Grad Pipet add 9ml of water to each 3. Use Grad Pipet add 1ml of red food dye to cup1 4. Stir well to mix solution 5. Record percent of concentration 6. Flush pipet with water 7. Use pipet to transfer 1ml of solution from cup1 to cup2 8. Repeat steps 4-7 for remaining medicine cups
Safety: Isopropyl Alcohol is medium at being flammable and slightly toxic to put in mouth and inhale. To avoids being burnt take extreme caution while using heating equipment. Do
