George Orwell’s Animal Farm is a satirical novella which uses a group of animals as central figures in the Russian revolution to demonstrate human failings and weaknesses. As the pigs gained power, they became corrupted and the main principles of animalism had a brutal downfall. The pig’s greed and hunger for power has led to this corruption in their society.
The pig’s greed has clearly led to the corruption of the original ideals of Animal Farm. The pigs wanted everything, and they will do anything to get it. They will bend rules, kill their comrades, and lie to do so. Napoleon sold Boxer to the knackers for of a case whiskey which the pigs enjoyed themselves. Squealer as a form of propaganda made up excuses to blind the truth. “The van had previously been the property of the knacker, and had been bought by the veterinary surgeon, who had not yet painted the old name out” (p.78). Increased food rations for the pigs and reduced rations for the other animals, is another clear example of greed in the pig’s actions. Once again squealer was used. “Milk and apple contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig……. The whole management and organization of this farm depend on us…… surely there is no one among you who wants to see Jones come back?” (p.22). The pig’s mind is totally hindered by their greed, breaking the ideals of animalism doesn’t matter to them which one factor that has led Animal Farm to corruption.
The corrupted society of Animal Farm was also due to the hunger of power. The pig wanted the immoral power to control Animal Farm which imbalanced society of all being equalled. Their hunger for power has also led them to breaking ‘The Seven Commandments’ and changing them to hide their wrong doings, day after day. Changing commandments has benefited Napoleon getting his power. The animals followed ‘The Seven Commandments’ as their way of living. By changing these rules, Napoleon is changing how the animals live and what they believe. “All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others” (p.85). Napoleon’s action has change Animal Farm’s society separating the pigs into the ‘superiors’ and other animals as ‘peasants’. This immense power has unbalanced the principle of Animalism.
