The Bitter Truth of Animal Farm
Animal Farm was first created under the idea that all animals were equal, but that idea changed. “Manor Farm”, as it once was called, changed its name to Animal Farm, to accommodate its changes in its society and beliefs as a whole. In the beginning all the animals strived to eradicate all the humans and fight for their freedom and rights. For all animals to work for themselves and to all be equal. But as in life, even the most honorable ideas can become something totally different in the end. And so it happened Animal Farm was changed, and taken over in leadership by the pigs. Recast into very much the same sort of thing that Animal Farm was created to get away from. The ideas of the farm were modified to fit the pig’s needs, “All animals are equal…”, then added to by the pigs,”…but some are more equal than others.” (38)This made it okay for the pigs to be more superior to the others and the animals living at the farm were unable to control the takeover of Napoleon the pig. They realized too late the bitter truth in his corrupt leadership. They watched as Animal Farm changed and the pigs prospered.
Before the pigs rose to power and the rebellion started Mr. Jones was the farmer at Manor Farm. He was much hated and often abused the animals when he was drunk. He would go for days without feeding them, used whips on them and everything the animals did or produced went to Mr. Jones’s benefit. “Man is the only creature that consumes without producing. He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plough, and he cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits. Yet he is lord of all the animals. He sets them to work, gives back to them the bare minimum that will prevent them from starving, and the rest he keeps for himself.”(6) Other than the farmer all the animals were treated very much the same and received the same rations. Man was in charge and the animals were expected to work like slaves to fit his needs. Both before and after the rebellion were very much alike, the animals lived poor lives, often went hungry, and worked hard while the one in charge lived happier and worked less. Man continued to do so until the animals acted out in rebellion and sent Mr. Jones out from the farm. But after the old farmer was gone a new dictator appeared and sends the farm back into the same downward spiral it was in before.

In the beginning Animal Farm was seemingly perfect. All the animals were proud and happy. They worked for themselves and themselves only. But slowly things began to change. Without the animals realizing it, the pigs began manipulating the other animals. Taking more food, making discreet changes to the seven commandments ,and what not. Once when milk went missing and the apples were gone and it was found out by the animals that the pigs were taking it all for themselves. Then pigs would say something clever like, “You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege...Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve our health...The whole management and organization of this farm depends on us. Day and night we are watching over your welfare. It is for YOUR sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples. Do you know what would happen If we pigs failed our duty? Jones would come back!..Surely there is no one among you who want to see jones come back?”(26) Eventually the animals
