In this case study, a man by the name Carl Robins is a new campus recruiter for ABC Inc. Carl has already exceeded expectations by recruiting several new hires after only being on the job for a few months. After getting off to a hot start, Carl more than likely feels pressured to keep up the hard work and to continue to exceed all expectations. This would be a great burden on anyone. His actions in the case study have led to several mistakes which have brought him to a halt where he is stuck. We will focus on what Carl has done so far and the mistakes that have been made. We will also look at what he should have done in the first place and his current options he has to help correct his mistakes.
Carl’s first mistake was guaranteeing Monica that everything would be taken care of and done on time. I do not think that Carl realized how much time and effort was required to prepare all the material for each new trainee. The application process alone takes a lot of time; because you have to make sure that each applicant fills everything out correctly and punctually. Drug tests are also very time consuming and also pretty costly. According to employmentdrugtesting.com, “Drug testing for small to medium employers generally cost in the $50-$70 range.” Drug screening has to be completed at certain approved facilities to prevent the company from a possible threat of facing a lawsuit or other legal action. Having to schedule each individual trainee to take a drug test could take up to a couple of weeks. After the trainees take their drug test, the sample then has to be sent out to a lab where the urine is tested to see if the trainee passed or failed. Scheduling physicals for 15 people would also be a nightmare and could take a great deal of time. Scheduling personal doctors’ appointments is hard enough, let alone for 15 people. Doctors seem to always be busy, especially depending on what time of the year it is. During winter months it could be busier due to the rise of illnesses. Doctors can also be out of town while trying to schedule the physicals. Emergencies also could come up which could mess up appointment times. If an appointment is scheduled far enough in advance it usually is not too difficult to schedule an appointment. But trying to schedule 15 doctor appointments in a short period of time would be very difficult especially for just one person to do like Carl. Carl also made a huge mistake by waiting until the last minute to try and schedule a time to use the computer. By Carl procrastinating and not booking the classroom right away he missed out on being able to use the room because Joe was more responsible and beat him to it. There was a schedule on the wall which also could have been convenient for Carl early on to see when he could have booked the computer room. Lastly, Carl made a big mistake by not checking to make sure that there were enough orientation manuals for all the students. Though this can be solved a lot quicker than some of the other mistakes, it is still something that should have been checked. At worst, Carl could just make a few quick copies so he can at least hand them to the trainees.
Carl seemed to be off to a good start at the beginning looking at how much he had to do and what he got accomplished. Carl proved himself to be a diligent worker who had a sharp focus on his duties to hire new employees. There is more to his job than just hiring people though, and it seemed like he was caught off guard and was overwhelmed by the following steps in the hiring process. The hiring process alone is difficult and lengthy process as well. Having to interview a bunch of prospective trainee’s would take a great amount of time and knowledge to find the right person that would best fit the job. Even if he finds someone who seems right for the job, he still has to make sure that they meet all the company’s requirements; which could be certain education requirements and job experience. So Carl has to pay attention
