Body Systems Preparation part I
What did you learn that you did not already know?

After reading the assigned modules, Team C all have concluded to ourselves that, to some degree, we have been expose and knowledgeable to information on the Body System. Jayleen and Tajre have both taken courses in Biology at another institution. MaRisha over the years have also taken biology, along with classes in anatomy and physiology and medical terminology. Ashley, having hands on experience, worked in a gastroenterology office. Yet, to our surprise there was area of material that was either a revelation or a refresher to us. Jayleen had no idea fat cells are called adipose tissue or the name muscle came from the Latin word "mouse". While MaRisha don’t remember reading the analogy about the “mouse” and the muscles in her pervious studies, it was pretty interesting. Jayleen was impressed learning the Liver can perform as many as 500 functions and didn't realize one of it's functions was to store glucose and fats, like a storage, only to released them when needed. Ashley came across as new material learning the different ways to unblock artery walls. Whether it is using a stent, using leg veins or other arteries to bypass the blockage, they all can still become blocked as well. Secondly, Ashley was interested in learning about how the lymph’s move through the body as blood does. As for Tajre and MaRisha, they had forgotten the principles of homeostasis. MaRisha reflexes on the meaning of homeostasis, the prefix homeo- means to stay the same (constant) while the suffix stasis- means to control. Therefore, homeostasis means a constant control also known as Negative Feedback. Tajre overlooked the great example of explaining homeostasis to someone who doesn't know; by simply explain homeostasis as the heating system of a home. When the indoor temperature falls below a set temperature, a signal is set to the furnace to turn on the heat. The heat disperses through out the house raising the temperature to its desire setting. This signals the furnace shuts off and is called the Negative Feedback or constant control.

What did you find most interesting? Why?

Team C thought the most interesting part, reading the modules was learning in depths is the digestive system, the circulatory system and immune system. Having to deal with the digestive system regularly, MaRisha is fascinated with the multiple parts the tongue, teeth, mouth, digestive tract, throat, and many other part the digestive system entails. She explains there are a lot of issue that can arise from the digestive system such as immotile cilia syndrome and GERD (gastroesphogeal reflux) where the stomach acid never really makes all the way into the stomach but stops mid-way and the stomach acid backs back up the epiglottis and can seriously choke you or burn your esophagus causing ulcer to form. Ashley found the heart to be one tough organ. Its strength to with stands harsh buildup of plaque over the years, struggling with partially blocked arteries that you would never even know you have. The heart can be manipulated but if it does not agree, then there is nothing one can do. As for the immune
