Respiratory System

Purpose and Functions
The main purpose of the respiratory system is to deliver oxygen to the body and to take away carbon dioxide.
Some other functions of this system includes voice production, body temperature and acid-base regulation, and the sense of smell.

Nose: where air is inhaled and exhaled
Pharynx: tubular part which allows the passage of air into lungs
Epiglottis: flap-like structure which prevents food or water from entering into the trachea at the same time a person is swallowing
Larynx: connects the trachea to the laryngopharynx; controls the flow of air when breathing
Trachea: known as the windpipe, controls the flow of air towards the bronchi Bronchi: allows the flow of air into lungs
Lungs: supply the body with oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide
Diaphragm: controls the expansion of the lungs
