Robert Mapplethorpe American photographer, known for his large-scale, highly stylized black and white portraits, photos of flowers and nude men.

Robert Mapplethorpe is recognized for his photographs such as delicate flower especially orchids and calla lilies, celebrity’s and by the 1980s his subject matter focused on statuesque male and female nudes, still lifes, and highly formal portraits of artists and celebrities and the world of homoerotic and BDSM acts including coprophagia, but it his nudes photography was what I was intrigued in. I think it Brings out the beauty in a nude model by showing of ones features. He shows such beautiful structure in his photos, with lighting to be perfect on all his models, arranging them to enhance the features. He did most of his photography in his studio and he loved to photograph black models, dancers and also body builders, celebrity’s etc. A lot of his nudes seem to be of torso’s buttocks and thighs, giving the photo a really perfect part of their body, an arched body suggests movement while the muscle definition shows strength, I believe Robert Mapplethorpe was trying to show the audience his perspective of how a body can be so beautiful in individual, these photos caused a national attention in the early 1990s. There are three major themes in Robert Mapplethorpe's photographic work: still life, portraiture, and the figure. In these photos there is texture that the muscles display, the skin tone from the different angle of light giving it a symmetrical feature hitting it from the curves that the muscle defined, such highly stylized compositions of black and white portraits.
