LAB 1
1. Describe the function of the following pieces of safety equipment and how each might be used: (10 points)
a. Eye Wash (2 points)
If chemicals splash into your eye the eye wash station is used to flood the eye with water for 15 to 30 minutes to wash the chemicals out of your eye.
b. Fire Blanket (2 points)
In case of a small fire a fire blanket can be thrown over the flames to extinguish them, once you have done this immediately leave the vicinity.
c. Shower (2 points)
In the event of a fire or chemical spill the shower can be used to flood your whole body with water. Stand directly under the flow of water for 15 to 30 minutes.
d. Chemical Spill Kit (2 points)
Don’t use bleach to clean a chemical spill, you must use a chemical spill kit that will properly neutralize the chemical.
e. Biological Spill Solution (2 points)
To clean up biological spills use a 10% bleach solution. It must be 10% bleach because less will be ineffective and more will be harmful.
2. Briefly describe a situation when each of the following waste disposal containers would be used and give examples of the waste involved: (4 points)
a. Broken Glass Container (2 points)
If there is broken glass that needs to be disposed of put it in a properly labeled plastic or metal container. Don’t put it in the regular trash can because someone taking out the trash or mistakenly reaching in the trash may be injured.
b. Biological Hazards Materials Container (2 points)
Biological materials are especially hazardous because they carry bacteria and viruses. All biological materials must be put in a biological hazards materials container so that it will be correctly disposed of.

3. Metric Measurements: Perform each of the following conversions. (24 points)
a. Given that one inch = 2.54 cm. State the student's height in inches and then convert to centimeters. (4 points)
I am 69 inches tall. 69in X 2.54cm/1in = 175.26cm
b. The width of a normal sheet of paper is 8.5 inches. Convert this length to kilometers. (4 points)
1m = 39.37in 1m = 1000km
8.5in X 1m/39.37in = .2159m
.2159m X 1m/1000km = .0002 km
8.5in = .0002km
c. A lab exercise in BIO156 required 300 ml of water that was poured from a two-liter container. How many milliliters were left in the original container? (4 points)
1L = 1000mL
2L X 1000mL/1L=2000mL
2000mL-300mL= 1700mL
1700mL of water were left in the original container.
d. A typical can of soda is 355 ml. How many liters are there in this can of soda? (4 points)
1L= 1000mL
355mL X 1L/1000mL = .355L
355mL = .355L
e. The weight of a small bag of sugar is 2.265 kg. The student is baking cakes for a college scholarship fundraiser. It takes 100 grams of sugar to make one small cake. How many cakes can be made from a single bag of sugar? (4 points)
1kg = 1000g
2.265kg X 1000g/1kg= 2265g
2265g/100g=22.65
So 22 small cakes can be made with one bag of sugar.
