3. The most popular events in Bendigo and Central Victoria and the purpose they serve in society.

I believe the most popular events in the Bendigo region are the following Sporting events.

The Bendigo International Madison is a cycling event that takes place over the Labour Day long weekend in March. It includes street cycling events as well as sprint racing and a criterium. Riders from all over Australia and the World take part in this event. The benefits of this event are International exposure, financial, sponsorship, health awareness, community partnerships, social participation and the opportunity to showcase tourism throughout our region.

The Bendigo Football League Grand Final is held in September each year following the Home and Away football season. The Bendigo Football League Grand Final has an attendance of 10,00-12,000 people and is held at the major sporting arena in the town the Queen Elizabeth Oval. This event brings together people from all walks of life whether they are supporters, players, umpires, coaches or committee members. Obviously there is health benefits for those who participate in the sport and other benefits include social, financial and community partnerships.

The Bendigo Cup (Horse Racing) is held in late October each year. And is one of the major events on Country Victoria Racing calendar. The Bendigo Cup is quite popular amongst the Horse racing fraternity as it is the last qualifying event prior to the Melbourne Cup held on the first Tuesday in November. Trainers, jockeys, members and spectators can from various states and territories around Australia as well as surrounding towns. The event is seen as quite a significant event
