AIDS also known as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This virus was discovered in the United States in 1984. As the illness progresses around the US, it interferes more and more with the immune system, making the person much more likely to get infections.HIV is transmitted primarily unprotected sexual intercourse contaminated transfusions, hypodermic, and from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding. Some bodily fluids, such as saliva and tears, do not transmit HIV. Prevention of HIV infection, primarily through safe sex and needle-exchange programs, is a key strategy to control the spread of the disease. There is no cure or vaccine; however, antiretroviral treatment can slow the course of the disease and may lead to a near-normal life expectancy. While antiretroviral treatment reduces the risk of death and complications from the disease, these medications are very expensive and may be associated with side effects. HIV is active within lymph nodes, which typically become swollen, in response to large amounts of virus that become trapped in the follicular dendritic cells (FDC) network. The stages of HIV infection are acute infection (also known as primary infection), latency and then AIDS. Acute infection lasts for several weeks and may include symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, inflammation of the throat, rash, muscle pain, malaise, and mouth and esophageal sores. The latency stage involves few or no symptoms and can last anywhere from two
