Abortion Abortion is a controversial topic because those who support it believe that a woman should have a choice to have an abortion if they wanted to because it is a constitutional right, while those who opposed believe that abortion should be outlawed because a human embryo and fetus is still a person even though the mother has not given birth which is immoral murder if the baby is killed. Abortion is the act of removing a human embryo or fetus from the uterus of a pregnant woman prior to the completion of the full term of pregnancy. For some the main concern when performing an abortion is the safety and health of a woman and not the body. There are regulations about when an abortion may be legally performed, and the specific requirements for abortions at the different stages of pregnancy. There are two sides to abortion for a woman. This is either the choice of pro-life or pro-choice. Many people support both sides of this topic. There is a lot of debate on abortion on whether or not an embryo or fetus is a person, or at what point an embryo or fetus does becomes a person. “In the 1820’s, U.S. government recognized that current abortion methods were resulting in high mortality rates, and unsafe practice was outlawed for the sake of women’s health. Despite the U.S. ban on abortion, illegal abortions still continued, particularly among poor women without access to or knowledge of contraception.”(Rich, 2011). The abortion rate has dropped slightly over the past couple years since there have been advances in technology, education and an increased use of contraception. Now if a teenager is young and may not have permission of having an abortion from their parents, they can go to an abortion clinic or office to stay for a couple of house to have an abortion without their parents even knowing. This is an issue because some people do not think that this should be allowed and it is wrong. In March of 2011 the healthcare reform legislation signed into law by U.S. President Barack Obama had maintained a ban on the use of federal money for abortions. The ban was criticized by abortion right groups and most maintained their support of the bill. In the U.S. fifty percent of women that have had an abortion are younger than 25 years old. Women between the ages of 20-24 obtain 33 percent and teens 19 and younger obtain 17 percent. There are two views that people have on abortion. One of them is called being pro-life. People who are pro-life believe that the unborn is a person, and terminating a pregnancy should be treated as a first-degree murder. These people are in favor of outlawing abortions, and of empowering the government to determine whether specific types of abortions should be allowed. “Abortion is in direct defiance of the commonly accepted idea of the sanctity of human life. It is the act of taking one’s life or in other words, murder.”(O’Brien, 2011). In our world today, no civilized society permits one human to intentionally harm or take the life of another human without punishment, and in this case abortion is no different. A lot of people who are pro-life believe that adoption is a good alternative to abortion and accomplishes the same result. In America there are about 1.5 million families wanting to adopt a child, so there is no such thing as an unwanted child. Most abortions can lead to medical complications later in a women’s life. These include the risk of ectopic pregnancies doubles, the chance of a miscarriage and pelvic inflammatory disease also increases. When a woman gets raped there is proper medical care that will ensure that a woman will not get pregnant. Abortion punishes the unborn child who had committed no crime but instead it is the perpetrator who should be punished. There have been studies shown that abortion frequently causes intense psychological pain and stress. Most pro-life groups and people believe that human life begins at conception. The other view that some people have on abortion
