Support Individuals With Specific Communication Need
1.1 Explain the importance of meeting an individual’s meeting needs.
Every individual has the right to communication as the Human Rights Act (1998) lists the freedom of expression as well as other rights relating to communication. As a support worker I have a moral obligation as well as adhering to the standards, codes of practice, guidelines, morals and law that govern my practice to ensure that communication needs are met. If an individual’s communication needs are not met then all aspects of their daily life can be affected such as not being able to communicate you are well and get help. This could be more severe in the case of abuse whereby the individual can’t communicate
Some of these aids are: * Letter boards
* Hearing aids for those with a hearing impairment
* Glasses or contact lenses for people with visual impairment
* Computer equipment that can help them speaks or produces an electronic voice.
1.6 Describe the potential effects on an individual of having unmet communication needs. A communication disability can be a hidden disability. This lack of recognition can be a barrier to effective participation. Lack of understanding can result in people's behaviour being misunderstood. A person may be described as 'challenging' mood swings etc. They may become withdrawn from other people. But their behaviour may be a result of an unmet communication support need. The meeting of communication needs of an individual assures his survival and happiness, their mental health depends on how far their communication needs are fulfilled. They may feel left out and alone, they may suffer from additional mental health disabilities such as depression. When I do spend time with an individual, and I include them and communicate in a way that they understand then they will feel as if they are valued and part of society.
2.3 Explain how and when to access information and support about identifying and addressing specific communication needs.
I would support the individual to develop communication methods that will help them to understand others and be understood by them by advising others on the best way the client
