“I Have a Dream” Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. On August 28, 1963, in Washington, Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous speech, “I Have a Dream.” In front of an interracial crowd of over 200,000 people, Dr. King uplifted the crowd with his emotional and powerful speech. After reading and researching the speech I learned that Martin Luther King Jr. was paying homage to Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. King’s speech also implores to the Declaration of Independence, Emancipation Proclamation, and the United States Constitution. He repeats many different phrases such as, “Let freedom ring…”, “I have a Dream…”, and “Now is the time…” to name a few. His main purpose of the speech was to end racism in the United States. He wanted everyone to be treated equally and have equality. Dr. King was one of the most important figures during the Civil Rights Movement. He enforced civil disobedience, like Gandhi. In middle school and high school when we learned about the “I Have a Dream” speech we didn’t learn about the whole speech. We only learned about the ending where he repeats “I have a dream…” and “Let freedom ring…” Those two parts are the main parts that are publicized. Martin Luther King Jr. talked about how ending slavery didn’t end the struggle of African-Americans. I feel like Dr. King’s speech did have a major impact in the United States. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed as a result of Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech. “He talks
