I have used these images to represent the thesis that “belonging is about being accepted as who you are, not what you want to become in order for you to fit in”.
I believe that the key toward belonging is identity, it sounds as easy as knowing yourself, knowing who you are and what your last names represent, remembrance of your culture and feel honoured to be in that particular culture, but for some people it is very difficult to do, so they find themselves unable to belong. To express this idea I have used the picture where a faceless person facing many different masks. Each mask represents a different identity, and he had to pick what he needs for the day, but none matched his skin colour, none of the masks are the man himself. The background of the image is a contrast of orange and black, which highlights how beautiful the outside world is compared to his dark inside. The masks are all looking depressed, because the man will never be happy. This image clearly shows that those masks doesn’t belong to the man, the man as well does not belong to the mask. Depression and loss of identity will eventually happen if you change yourself in order to belong in a place that doesn’t belong to you.
My second picture is many different puzzles. I use that to present the idea that no one is perfect, everyone is different with their strength and weakness, their interest and their way of achieving things. Some fits in with just a “click” and some needs a change in “angle”, but some just don’t belong at all. Some can belong to many people, some even more. Belonging is a basic human need, so people constantly meet different people to belong with, it would be a mess if you don’t know what to do with them. But if you do, you will realize that they all fit perfectly! As we all belong to the human race. You don’t have to change yourself: in fact you can never completely change. There will be people that need you, and there will be people that dislike you. Change never solves the problem, just be who you are is the best way to belong and the only way to be truly accepted.
