Will the world’s oil ever run out?
Introduction
In this project, I want to produce a varied presentation the question in hand and discuss the myths commonly associated with oil running out.
Oil has been running our world for several hundred years, we use it every day in our cars, to run our houses through the use of electricity and it is in common objects like plastic. It is one of the most commonly known and used resource in this modern era. Unfortunately it is not a renewable resource and therefore the question of will the world’s oil ever run out is most likely very true, however it will not be running out anytime soon, it will be vastly available in our lifetime, in our children’s lifetime and in our grandchildren’s lifetime, ultimately it may never run out simply because we may not have discovered the oil that is already out there, but only time will tell if it does ever run out.
In this project I will discuss whether we will find more oil in this earth and possibly other planets and the common myths associated with oil and the fact it is running out. The vast majority of people have been educated to think that the world’s oil is running out and we are nearing up to or already at this so called “peak oil” level. Whilst peak oil is a fact and could eventually become a reality one day it will not happen in the near future or even the far future, this is only a concept created by people as a scare factor to stop people from using oil so much and switch to alternative resources like wind power, solar energy, hydroelectric power, tidal energy, geothermal energy and much more. This scare tactic is by the government to help us citizens become more sustainable in our use of oil and to reduce our carbon footprint to help stop climate change.
Very few people actually know that the world’s oil is perfectly fine and I will be discussing how even more is being found every day. People have been forced into the ideology that oil will run out very soon by reading the news, watching TV, talking to friends etc. this is why I want to carry out this project because of the number of people who have been brainwashed into thinking this and sorting out the myths from the facts. Even I was led to believe this by being taught this in science and geography lessons at school which I later found out to be false even if it was believed to be true a just a few years back, so this project will entail getting to the issues surrounding oil, why people are being led to believe it is running out and will we actually ever run out of oil. The last question being the major talking point during this project as research shows that we may never run out of oil and even if we did we wouldn’t have to carry out building a vast number of wind turbines and put a solar panelled roof on every house. There are many other ways in which the world can run if oil were to ever run out, things such as shale gas and hydrogen gas, shale gas is already being used in huge amounts mainly in the USA already and hydrogen gas is looking like an ever increasing alternative to run cars on but the technology is still not there yet for it to be utilised. Technology is another talking point in this project as technology will play a huge part in the future for oil production, this is because as technology advances the processes for extracting oil will become cheaper and finding oil sources will become easier.
This question is very interesting to me because without oil we, as humans, would be able to do practically nothing and not be able to really function without it like we do in our daily lives now; oil has been the past, is the present and most likely will be the future for us as an energy resource, rather than alternative sustainable forms of energy that we have been taught to build and use.
