I’ve always wondered why there were so many liquor stores in predominantly black communities. When you go out to the suburbs the distance between the stores are much greater. Recently, I read an article where the singer Tyrese was kicked out of my local radio station here in Wilmington, Delaware. It’s alleged that he had an outburst over the amount of liquor stores in the community. Though it’s always been on my mind, I finally decide to take a stand. As graduate student who studied marketing, I pay attention to the variety of advertising mediums that companies utilize. For the last several months I observed one alcohol beverage company’s billboards that are strategically placed as you enter into my predominantly black community; where the murder rate this year continues to increase every day. After I noticed them at almost all entrances to my city I became a little disturbed. It’s not like the kids today don’t have enough pressure going on but to have Ciroc billboards visible to impressionable youths is unacceptable. The youths of today look up to individuals/ celebrities like Sean Combs so who’s to say that they’re not thinking “If I drink Ciroc I can be like him”. As a parent of two ages 6 and 9 it is my duty to ensure that they aren’t exposed to too much too soon.
