Diversity Worksheet

Answer each question in 50 to 150 words. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued?

Diversity is being different or not similar. Being diverse and having diversity is definitely valued in that without it we wouldn’t experience different things. If we didn’t have diversity then we wouldn’t be able to experience the way that other people live and we wouldn’t be able to fully understand the world. I believe that we each live in a very small part of the world and what makes our world’s bigger is learning new things and going through different experiences. Without those different experiences I think that you end up staying closed minded and rather than embracing those experiences you become a person like the ones in the KKK where they couldn’t open their minds to something new or different.

2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?

Ethnocentrism is when you judge another person or culture based on you or your culture. This can be very harmful to a society because you are not including a large portion of the community or the society just because they don’t fit the definition of what you would consider to be normal. I think that this happens a lot when people stereotype others not just because of race or culture but because of their race and ethnicity. This is where you get gangs because people aren’t accepting of other cultures and the way that they do things.

3. Define emigration and immigration.

Emigration is when you leave a country and settle into another one. For example, if I were to leave the United states and settle into England I would be emigrating because I’m leaving my previous home land. Immigration is when you come into a new country as a permanent resident. Using the previous example, I would be an immigrant to England from the United States. (Schaefer, 2012 pg. 30)

4. What are some of the ways groups of people are identified?

People are identified by their biological race which is the “mistaken notion of a genetically isolated human group” (Schaefer, 2012 pg. 30) They are also identified by their ethnic group, minority group and racial group. These are all groups that show who people are based on just what you can see with your eyes. Not what you can actually deduct from meeting the person. I think that this happens more often than not where we don’t take the time to actually meet a person
