Background Info. And Research
Paper Chromatography is qualitative
method used to detect substances dissolved in a solution. This is created from substances you wish to test for. You blot small amounts of each ion on developing paper and placing them in a developing solvent and the product of the following will be your Chromatography.
Purpose
This shows how you can separate
different organic compounds from a mixture using variations in solubility, size of the molecules and retention by the paper being used to separate the compounds.
Materials
Candy that has color coating
Rubbing Alcohol
Coffee filters
Plastic cups
Pencil
Ruler
Tape
Foil
Table Salt
Tooth picks
Measuring spoones
2 liter bottle
Procedure
1. I first cut the two circular coffee filters into 3in by 9in

rectangles.
I then drew a straight line 1in above the bottom of the filter. Next I marked four colored dots across the line 1/2in apart, and labeled them.
To make the salt solution I mixed 1/8Th inch of salt in with
3 cups of water.
Taking one of my glasses, I filled it with about a 1/4Th inch of my solution.
Taping my coffee filter around my pencil, I laid it in the solution where it touched the bottom but not the colors.
I then repeated these steps with alcohol instead of the salt solution.

Cut coffee filters into rectangles measuring 3 cm by 9 cm 2. Put 4 drops of water equally distant on foil 3. Made 4 pencil dots and labeled the colors 4. Dipped toothpick in one sample of colored water and dabbed the color onto the pencil dot for that color. Let filter paper dry & added more color…
