In order to be sure of the reactions, the researchers analyzed the reactions of the athletes who won the silver and the bronze medals. The athletes were also asked the nature of their counterfactual thoughts. Finally the researchers had a group of participants to evaluate the post competition interviews. The participants of the study were undergraduate students from the Cornell University and they were twenty in number. The participants were not interested and uninformed in the sports they were recruited to observe. The participants were to rate the expressions showed by the athletes after watching a videotape of the 1993 Olympic games. The participant’s ratings were very reliable. The bronze medal winner’s appeared happier than the ones who won the silver medals. The immediate reaction of happiness of the athletes who won the bronze medal was 7.1 but the mean rating for the silver medalists’ was4.8. When examining the athletes on the medal stand, the ones who won the bronze medal had a mean happiness rating of 5.7 compared to 4.3 to the silver medalists’. Researchers concluded that the athletes who won the bronze medals were happier than the ones who won the silver medals. This is in support of the theory by James (1892). The expectations of the silver medalists are greater than that of the bronze medalist and therefore second place does not off the silver medalist the satisfaction needed.
