Solutes plus Solvents equals Chocolate milk
Chocolate milk is amazing but do people real know what it is composed of. Well for those people that did not know it is made out of solutes and solvents. Solutes dissolve in solvents, and the solvents dissolves the solutes (Davis 402). So Solutes and Solvents are very interesting because people deal with solutes and solvents every day without even knowing that they are using them. Solutes have of abilities that let them change metal and physical characteristics. Solvents are around people houses, can be hazards, and they also have polarity. Also solutes and solvents have a long and important history.
In Chemistry there have been a lot of things that were discovered a long time ago. Solutes and solvents are one of those things, which date back to 18th century. The discoverer of solutes and solvents was Thomas Graham, who discovered this in Great Britain. Thomas studied in the field of colloid chemistry, which led him to be the earliest to distinguish between colloids and crystalloids, and it also helped him discover the method of dialysis for separating colloids from true solutions (Graham).
The substance that is dissolved in a solvent is called a solute. Solutes are commonly a solid, but it can also be a gas or a liquid. Raoult's law states that the addition of solute to a liquid weakens the tendency for the liquid to become a solid or a gas (Raoult’s law). Solutes are classified into two classes which are soluble and insoluble. When a solute dissolves in a particular solvent they are called a soluble. While a solute that does not dissolve in the same particular solvent are called insoluble. A couple of examples of soluble and insoluble are salt, and wax because salt is a soluble in water but insoluble in petrol, while wax is insoluble in water but soluble in petrol. Even when a solute is soluble in a solvent, only a certain amount will dissolve in the solvent, and when the point is reached where no more solute will dissolve the solution will become saturated (Precipitation). Solutes are known to strength and soften metals, depending on what type of metal they combine with (Trinkle). Also in the past solutes helped discover the method of dialysis because Graham was able separate colloids from true solutions (Graham).
A solvent is a liquid or gas that dissolves a solid, liquid, or gaseous solute which results in a solution (Solvents). It is easy to tell the difference between solutes and solvents because solvents are usually the greater amount. Water is the most common solvent in everyday life. Organic solvents are the most commonly used solvents. They are called organic solvents because they contain carbon chemicals. Common uses right now in the present for organic solvents are in dry cleaning and detergents, paint thinners, nail polish removers, in perfumes. Organic solvents also may be divided into polar and nonpolar types. Polar solvents have molecules whose electric charges are unequally distributed, leaving one end of each molecule more positive than the other. Nonpolar solvents have molecules whose electric charges are equally distributed (Solvents). Solvents usually have a low boiling point and evaporate easily. They can also be removed by distillation, leaving the dissolved substance behind. Solvents can also be used to extract soluble compounds from a mixture; the most common example is the brewing of coffee or tea with hot water.
