Traveling Nightmare At the young age of 25, I packed my children and everything I owned to move across country to prove myself. We lived in Indiana for a short time till home sicken kicked in. At which point I placed everything in storage till a later date and loaded my car down and headed home. The traveling nightmare began a year and a half later. Our traveling nightmare begins on an early August morning at DFW International Airport at 4 am to board a plane headed to Indianapolis. My traveling companion is my sixteen year old cousin Becky. Becky was super excited to fly on an airplane and travel outside of Texas. Neither of us knew what the next few days would have in store for us. We board our plane and watch the sun come up as we take off, this my friends the most the enjoyable part of our traveling nightmare. The plane trip was uneventful. We landed in Chicago and played around in the airport for a few hours. We boarded our second plane, which was a crop duster and scared Becky. We land at Indianapolis International Airport safe and sound. We hail down a taxi to take us to pick up the U-Haul in Meridian Hills, IN. The taxi ride was fun for a few minutes, till I realized the taxi driver was going the wrong way! The taxi driver was more concerned about asking us question about President George W. Bush than where he was going. For some crazy reason he thought everyone from Texas is or was related to the President. We arrive at the U-Haul location, where the taxi driver over charged us by $75. I was just ready to be out of the taxi and headed home. The U-Haul manager was a jerk from the minute we walked into his U-Haul/Mini Mart/ Farm supply store. First he did not have the correct size truck available, even though I reserved my U-Haul 2 months prior. So I was left with a 26’ truck, which I am sure I need a CDL to drive. Next he informed me that I would need to pay with the credit card I reserved the truck with and not cash! Well guess what man the credit card is in Texas. After a very heated agreement and he informed me that I was stupid and had no knowledge of how the world works I was able to leave in his business. With what I am sure was the very first U-Haul ever manufactured! The radio only picks up am stations clearly and no air conditioning! We are finally on our way to the storage unit in Elwood, IN. But guess what we leave headed in the wrong direction, thanks to the jerk at the U-Haul location. Not realizing till we have gone about 50 miles, just wasting day light, gas and money (which is in short supply at this point). We finally arrive at the storage unit to load all my things and head south as quickly as we can. Becky is trying every key on the ring; you guessed it the key to my lock is in Texas! So we drive down to the Ace Hardware Store to purchase some bolt cutters, more money we can’t afford to spend. Arrive back at the storage unit; it takes both of us to cut the lock off. We load everything as fast as we can and head out of town. Making one last stop to fill up and grab some food, as we haven’t eaten since our layover in Chicago and count our money, $200 is all we have left to make a 1,022 mile drive from Elwood, IN to Roanoke, TX. This is the last stretch of our traveling nightmare; it is late in the evening before we make our next stop at a road side park for a snack and to call the family back home. We inform them of our short amount of funds and that our plan is to drive till we run out of money and gas. As the evening turns into night; we are becoming
