There are 24 times zones in the world and 24 hours in a day. There are 360 degrees of longitude on Earth, and therefore, each time zone crosses 15 longitude degrees.

Question 3 A) The standard meridian for Cincinnati is therefore 90 degree west and the standard meridian for Hong Kong is therefore 120 degree west . B) The exact difference in longitude between the two standard meridians 210 degrees .

Based on this method, there is a time difference of 14 hours between the two cities. Therefore, if the time in Cincinnati is 7.00PM Thursday, the time and day in Hong Kong is 9.00am Friday . C) The actual difference in longitude between the two locations is 198 degrees , which corresponds to 13 time zones. Therefore, using this shortcut, we approximate a time difference of 13 hours between Hong Kong and Cincinnati. Using this short cut, you will get the right answer in many cases, but not always! I got the answer incorrectly because sometimes, there is daylight savings that makes a difference.

Question 4

a) We could see the differences between the two figures shown of our Earths in January and July. The difference happens because of the solar radiation, determined as the difference between the amount of absorbed shortwave radiation and the outgoing longwave radiation. Because of the direction of the Earth’s tilt changes with the Sun, the northern and southern parts of our Earth get different amount of sunlight. When Earth is leaning toward the Sun, it gets direct rays of sunlight and it is warmer. On the other hand, when the Earth is leaning away from the Sun, it receives less amount of sunlight and is colder. The winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere
