2014­2015 Wetlands Are Wonderful!
The forests and wetlands of the world are being destroyed at unacceptable rates. This destruction is causing many adverse effects on the environment, many of which will not be felt by the global population until they are irreversible.
Humans cannot live in the presence of perplexing interactions of millions of species in biological systems.
But as humans, we live during a period of the greatest loss of plant and animal species since the mega­extinction of the Jurassic Period 65 million years ago. We are clearing out too much of these environments at one time! All of this plant and animal loss was caused mostly by human activities, most of it coming from deforestation and timber harvest.
Most humans would most likely think “Hey, who cares about wetlands! They’re just in our way of building things!” But what those people don’t get is that wetlands are more than just forestation that they can harvest for lumber. No, they are much more than that; they provide high concentrations of animals­ including birds, mammals, fish, and invertebrates. They serve as homes for all of these creatures, and all we do is just make them find a new place to live! It has been proven that wetlands help to minimize impacts from flooding by providing an area for water to move and slow down during storm events.
