In The Starry Night the composition is also quite interesting. What captures my eye right away and stands out the most when I look at the painting is the giant mountain-like shaped figure, with curved pointy tips, something that does not look like anything else painted in the image and is much darker than everything around it. Unlike in Rousseau’s painting, in Van Gogh’s it’s hard to see what some of the painted objects are supposed to represent, especially the night sky. Are the red, orange, and yellow round objects representing stars or planets in space? Van Gogh did a nice job adding a feel to the night which we would expect to be cool and windy due to the painted wind in the middle of it all. Vincent Van Gogh’s use of line is more of smooth and curvy type, where the moon, mountains and the trees we see are anything but sharp and straight. The night sky and curved moon puts an individual at comfort and ease. We don’t see much of value in Van Gogh’s painting as we did in Rousseau’s. The perspective, however, is much better as we see with the buildings that are drawn and the further we look the smaller the buildings get. Same can be said for the hills in the image, they get smaller as we go from right to left. Both of the paintings I feel use the mood to capture the viewers attention, as we see the unexpected calmness between the lion and the gypsy, as well as the beautiful night sky in The Starry Night.
