Marigolds by Eugenia W. Collier
My purpose of writing the descriptions of Marigolds is to explain the creations of
Marigolds, major background, why is Marigolds relevant to real life occurrences, how did
Lizabeth maintain to accomplish her goals, and what was the dramatic conflict that happened at the end to give a jaw dropping resolution to fit spice into the conclusion. Marigolds are a short story seminar classic written by Eugenia W. Collier in the year of 1969. Introducing a seminar of a young girl named Lizabeth that was growing up in poverty while living in the Great
Depression. Lizabeth was an African-American girl that always had low self-esteem for herself, and thought she didn’t fit in with the neighborhood kids or cool people at her school. Even though Lizabeth had low self-esteem about herself, she would still sneak out with the neighborhood children to wander out in the streets while their parents are at work. One day the neighborhood kids and Lizabeth decided to taunt an old senior citizen on the block name Mrs.
Lottie. Mrs. Lottie had the most beautiful house on the block because she had a lot of Marigolds around her gardens. The children would throw pebbles in her yard and Miss Lottie would yell at them. Finally, at the end of the story Lizabeth feels a certain way, mainly sadness, weariness, and thinks that she is ugly or isn’t worth it. Lizabeth finds a way to feel better and she decides that she wants a beautiful patch of Marigolds. Lizabeth then leaves Mrs. Lottie’s house and return to her bedroom crying and hesitating throughout the mist, and then Lizabeth realizes that she had lost her innocence.
I chose Marigolds because I can relate to the place where Lizabeth is currently in. At the start she wants to fit in but she has low self-esteem for herself, less confident, sneaky towards her family, and feel like she has lost or broken her confidence. Marigolds is relevant to real life situations because most young girls would want to fit in with the popular kids or think they’re worthless

just because they haven’t got enough attention, and Marigolds is relevant because 93% of the youth can relate to it, and so on. Marigolds were based in a rural city in Maryland where everyone is suffering during the Great Depression. Lizabeth fitted in with the neighborhood kids because by being a follower and thought that she didn’t have the courage to do the same.
Important Background Information is that Lizabeth was poor living in the Great Depression and she has no ability to change her life. Her parents feel that their worthless since they couldn’t provide for one another. When Lizabeth grows up she feel like she’d grown up and is more mature. Her family is facing political pursuit in their home country and can’t wait to get flee into the United States. Lizabeth accomplished is to make a positive dynamic decision even if you came from the bottom, or once lived in poverty you can still become successful. She realized what frustration she was going through when she ruined Miss Lottie’s marigolds. The main conflict in the story shows that the only things that are holding her back from demonstrating these traits materialistically is because she is poor and her parents nor she doesn’t understand
Lizabeth situation. Lizabeth achieves by appreciating good things in life and just because you’re faced with bad things doesn’t mean you should take beautiful things down with you. It also teaches her that internal strength can overcome anything and weighs more than fear. Lizabeth was going through an internal struggle where womanhood was overtaking her childish ways, and she realized that by letting go can make you
