The Search For Our True Self

For many Christians the quest to find their true authentic self is a life long process. In perusal of Rohr’s (2013)article entitled “ The Search for Our True Self,” he focused on the voyager happening upon his or her “True Self, or the soul, and moving beyond the false self, or ego.” The writer closely identifies with what the author sets out to accomplish. Four years ago, the writer heeded the call from God to leave her father’s home in the Caribbean and migrate to the America, in hopes of starting life anew. The journey to which the writer was called was one of self-discovery. Living in a new country coated with a different way of life was challenging, to say the least. Yes! The writer answered the called to advance on a totally unfamiliar path set by the hand of God.
According to Rohr (2013), the search for true self is similar to finding “an immortal diamond.” In essence the true self ought to have qualities such as dependability, radiant and reliability. Furthermore, Rohr enlightens when he sets forth that there is a “false self,” the small self or ego, while on the other end; the soul is the “true self.” It is evident that as one continues on the path to discovering the “true self,” the ingredients we thought were missing actually lay dormant with as if awaiting the right environment to awaken with vibrancy. The writer recalls that while on the road to finding her true self, the ideologies that were enshrined deep within had to be released. It would involve an emptying out of the old beliefs and mannerisms and embracing the new nature God was offering.
