Essay 3: argumentation The nurse will see you now … or will they? “There is not enough staff to answer every buzzer the moment it sounds.” (Graham.web.2013) a survey was conducted by Scott Graham, on over 2,500 nurses and the standard of care in which they were able to deliver. One nurse responded, “We do not have enough staff members to answer each patient the moment the buzzer sounds. If six patients in a thirty two bed ward all press their buzzers at once , and there are only four staff members on duty , two may not be answered.” Nurses are an important factor to the health care industry. They provide the adequate care that each hospital patient needs and deserves. However, with the lack of nursing staff, it has been very difficult for patients to receive the quality care that they desperately need. Nurses have enough stress as it is with their work loads and all that is expected from them. To make matters worse, the fact that each individual patient may be at risk of not receiving the proper care they need, because of lack of nursing staff is horrific. With the lack of resources of our nursing staff and health care officials, the quality of patient‘s care will suffer tremendously. To begin with, majority of patients are being left out unattended to suffer because of the lack of medical care. Patients come to hospitals every day in need for urgent care and their lives are at a very crucial standpoint. This is not just an issue addressed towards the United

States However; this is an issue needing to be addressed worldwide. In the UK “patients were failed by a shortage of lung cancer nurses. There are believed to be just 200 full time equivalent lung cancer nurse specialists supporting 38,000 people diagnosed every year.”(nursing standard 24.9 web.2009) As shown with the demand of health care continuing to rise, there are not many nurses who are specialized as well. Imagine family members who just turn out to be another statistic because they were unable to get the care that they needed. Some of these patients conditions are life threatening and their lives are In the matter of the nurses and health care officials hands. Patients should never be turned away just because the sound of a “hospital buzzer” that was unable to be answered.

Additionally, many reasons for the nursing shortage are varied .one reason in particular, many look at it as a stereotypical type of career “woman who have traditionally made up 90% of the nursing work force thus, driving a large number of potential nurse candidates away.” (k.kelsey web.2013) so what might be done to help ensure that patients are getting the quality care they need and to improve the outlook on the nursing shortage? For one, hospital and health care workers should create more inside and outside methods on improving the nursing image regardless of gender by recruiting young individuals who have a passion for helping others. There’re many individuals who want to make a difference and in the end feel that they have a rewarding and beneficial career. Another, factor of the nursing shortage is the economic drawback; hospitals are looking to reduce labor costs. Thus, cutting their overall labor pool and eliminating a number of full-time positions. However when taking a look at other stand points , facilities such as nursing homes and at home nurses , are much in demand as well. There are many ways to diversify nursing according to Dena Nardi with the proper training and with the proper teaching resources, and designing new educational models that fit global health care needs. basically if hospital and health care workers are able to take in more applicants , they should be able to teach candidates the basic skills and training in order to improve the health care system overall and deliver quality care to each of the patients.
