The Crucible
Have you ever told a lie which later developed into a rumor of some sort? Arthur Miller's The Crucible is set in Salem, Massachusetts in the year 1693. During the witch trails in Salem, many characters show their dark traits. Throughout the play you can see accusations of witch craft devastating Salem. If left unchecked, lies based on hypocrisy, vengeance, and fear can grow like a cancer, with deadly results. Every so often people will have a desire and will do anything to acquire it. For instance, Abigail lusted for Proctor but had competition, Elizabeth, Proctor’s wife. Abigail’s accomplishment was to eliminate Elizabeth from Proctor's life. The only way she was going to achieve this was to manipulate Proctor. "She's blackening my name in the village she is telling lies about me! She is cold, sniveling women and you bend to her." Abigail had a lot of wrath towards Elizabeth and wanted Proctor to realize that so he could be with her. This shoes how heartless Abigail is for Proctor's love and attention. Many people won't confess the truth for various reasons. Marry Warren was one of them. Even though she knew that Elizabeth was innocent she couldn't confess. Proctor insisted for her to confess to the judge, but feared Abigail. She knew what Abigail was capable of doing if she let out the truth. "She'll kill me for saying that! Abby'll charge lechery on you, Mr. Proctor. She'll ruin you with it, I know she will.” Proctor committed lechery on Abigail. Abigail would get vengeance on Marry and Proctor if Mary told the truth. Abigail did what she wanted; she took Elizabeth out of Proctor’s life.

A lot of deaths occurred in Salem during 1692. The law system was very poorly managed. Many people were executed after being accused of witchcraft. Reverend Hale was a
