In the play, The Crucible a character that really cough my attention when it came to justice was John Proctor. Throughout the play he had numerous obstacles and problems with the people or Salem, and with his marriage. I think for every time Proctor sought justice he was slammed with injustice. John Proctor sought justice when he was the only one to speak out against the Salem girls, when he confessed to adultery, and when he wouldn’t let the court take his name. Towards the beginning of the play the girls of Salem were involved in a witchcraft ceremony. To try and put an end to the all the lying and commotion John Proctor tries to get Mary Warren testify against Abigail in court, but she flaked under pressure and accuses John of being a witch. In retaliation she accuses John and his wife, Elizabeth Proctor of being witches. Abigail telling the court that they were witches was also a plot get Elizabeth Proctor away from John because she still had feelings for him that he doesn’t have for her. This was a perfect example of when Proctor basically tells the court that the girls have the government rapped around their finger, causing injustice to many people when he says “I'll tell you what's walking in Salem - vengeance is walking in Salem. We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling the keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law! This warrant's vengeance! I'll not give my wife to vengeance!" With the girls new found power they eventually had John proctors wife sent to jail once accused of witchcraft. This was also a perfect example of how I think John strived for justice and was receiving injustice in return. After Elizabeth’s arrest John tried everything in his power to get her back. His method was to have the court see Abigail for an unreliable person. He goes to the court and confesses to having an affair with Abigail and is only attacking Elizabeth to get back at him for choose his wife over her. This should have been the perfect plan but Abigail because Abigail admits to the accusations but Danforth thinks she was just under Tituba’s spell so to prove himself he points out that Parris was also the one who caught the girls dancing in the woods in the first place. He also mentions that his wife is a good woman and is completely incapable of telling a lie. Soon after, Elizabeth was summoned and asked if the affair between her husband and Abigail happened, but against her morals she lies to the court to defend her husband’s name not knowing that she needed to tell the truth. By doing this she did the opposite and damming John’s name and the court had him
