There are many aspects of a person that make them a hero, throughout the play; The Crucible John Proctor displays many characteristics of a hero. A tragic hero is known to bear responsibilities for his own actions, to have meaning in his suffering, and many other qualities. When it comes down to classifying Proctor it’s necessary to analyze his character traits in order to determine if he is a tragic hero or not. Proctor does prove to be a hero because of his morality and his self-pride.
It is important to have morality as a hero meaning to be able to distinguish right from wrong. While arguing with Elizabeth Proctor says, “I have not moved from there to there without I think to please you...I cannot speak but I am doubted every moment judged for lies...” (194). Proctor understands that what he did was wrong and he has been constantly trying to make up for it, but can’t if Elizabeth won’t accept his mistake by questioning him all the time as if they are in court. In the actual courthouse Proctor admits to adultery by saying, “I have known her, sir. I have known her” (220). Proctor not only was able to acknowledge his wrongdoing, but also was able to prove the truth about Abigail, that she’s not as innocent as everyone makes her out to be.
