The Crucible The Crucible by Arthur Miller is an example of a modern American drama written in the 1950’s whose importance still speaks to us today. In the Crucible they allowed innocent people to be put to death for no reason. It was easy for people to accuse others that they hate, to be found guilty of witchcraft. Family members were very depressed and sad because their loved ones were being put to death for no reason. There are many different themes in Arthur Miller’s the Crucible. One very important theme that is evident throughout the whole play is revenge, or punishment in return for. Three main characters that want revenge in the story are John Proctor, Abigail Williams, and Thomas Putnam. John Proctor, a local farmer who lives just outside the town of Salem, is very stern, and he hates hypocrisy. However, he has a hidden sin; he had an affair with Abigail Williams, his servant at the time. In act II of the play, John Proctor wants’ revenge on people who are leading the witch hunt. He thinks it is ridiculous because he knows that the girls are just making the stories up because they do not want to get in trouble for dancing in the woods. A man may think god sleeps, but god sees everything, I know it now I beg you sir, I beg you-see her for who she is…… she thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave! And well she might, for I thought of him softly. God help me, I lusted and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore’s vengeance… this quotation is taken
