The Beliefs of Islam Muslims practice the religion of Islam, which contains many beliefs, codes, and laws. They believe that there is only one God. This is called monotheistic. They also had Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad as their prophets. Now you probably wonder how everyone learns all the strict beliefs and rules of everyday life for a Muslim, and there was. It is called the Koran. There are a few different ways of spelling this. You could write it as Koran, Quran, or Qu’ran. Whichever way you spell it, it will still contain the same exact thing. This holy book contains 114 chapters. These chapters range from religion, to government, to family, and even to daily life as a Muslim. Also, while not stated directly in this holy book, there are five pillars to Islam. There are five pillars of Islam. The first pillar stated that there is only one God and Muhammad is the prophet. The second pillar says that you must pray five times daily. They had specific times set throughout the day to pray. They would hear a bell and face a certain direction to pray. The third pillar is Ramadan. Ramadan is a blessed month where Muslims fast during the daylight hours. That means that they do not eat or drink in a way to purify the soul, refocus on God, and practice self-sacrifice. The fourth pillar is a pilgrimage to Mecca, also called Hajj. This means that each Muslim is expected to travel to Mecca, which is the sacred city of Islam. This is a holy journey which also called hajj. The fifth and final pillar of Islam is Almsgiving. Almsgiving is where Muslims give to the poor. Almsgiving is mainly like charity work. They are supposed to participate in this every year. Sometimes Muslims combine some of these pillars together. It is kind of like the saying, “Kill two birds with one stone.” For example, Muslims could combine the fourth and fifth pillar. They can complete their journey to Mecca, and while they are there can donate or do charity work for Almsgiving. Now, while there are
