Effective communication is the most important part in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults. The way I deliver a message will affect the way others receive it and vice versa. It is my duty and responsibility to safeguard the children's welfare, meet their needs and support their learning, therefore it is essential that I communicate adequately with them as well as with their parents and other professionals I work in partnership with, verbally and also non verbally, to build positive relationship with them and enable myself to do so appropriately. Thus I make sure I listen, speak and treat everyone as I would like to be listened, spoken and treated, considering each situation, in a right tone of voice, according to the age and position or role of the other person, in a calm way, professionally, kindly, with respect and using appropriate body language. Poor communication would unable us to build positive relationships, messages and information would not be shared properly, causing misunderstandings or even miscommunication, and that would not be beneficial or/and supportive for children, parents or anyone working with them.

The principles of relationship building with children, young people and adults is to feel comfortable in one another's company. This encourages more effective communications between each other. People are likely to avoid each other and do not talk much to someone they don't really get along or feel uncomfortable with. Positive relationships need to be nurtured and developed and do not happen by luck. They are built upon everyday with others and there are certain factors that help us maintain the positivity. Effective communication is the key area for relationship building, and covers many different forms such as being clear on key points. Specially with young children, I might have to repeat something a few times and clearly as they may find it difficult to maintain attention. Maintaining a sense of humor when appropriate is also a good thing as laughter can be a good way of releasing tension and allows us to see the lighter side of a situation and may prevents a situation from becoming stressful. It is really important that I show respect, courtesy and I listen actively to everyone's opinions and points of view, considering that they might be from a different background or culture to my own and that they might have a different perspective on issues, values and beliefs. Another way that helps me or anyone building a positive relationship is by simply remembering names and the preferred way to be addressed, by asking about and remembering personal or important aspects, matters or interests of others, for example, a personal issue they may have had and shared with you recently, remembering their birthdays, or even remembering that apple is their favorite fruit. This shows others that I listen and give some importance to what they say, thus, they feel valued and comfortable. It is also very important that I am considerate and that I take time to understand that sometimes children, young people and adults have other concerns and issues in their private lives and that this could be a reason for them to behave or react out of character in some situations. In this cases, I keep calm, listen carefully, show interest in what they say and respond in an adequate way, specially if they are asking me for advice or any type of assistance.
