TDA 3.1 Area 1 -Principles of Communication
TDA 3.1 – 1(1.1)
To give an explanation of effective communication and why it is important in developing relationships with CYP and Adults.
We need to be a able to demonstrate a high level of communications skills when working with CYP’s and adults. The ability to communicate well is one of the most important skills we need in life. There are different types of communication. Most commonly used is verbal, using language and speech to communicate. Examples of other types of communication are makaton which is the use of symbols and signs to communicate. Makaton is used worldwide and is a useful way of communicating with young children and people with learning disabilities. Sign language the method of communicating for death and dumb. Other meals of communication are brail for the blind or partially sighted, letter’s, emails, telephone and text messages.
The reasons we communicate are to let other people know how you feel, what you want, to give instructions and to set expectations. Communication is not just about expressing what you want. It is also extremely important to be able to an active listener. Listening helps to resolve and get understanding. Talking and listening show’s that there is a mutual understanding. If you do not listen then you put yourself in a vulnerable situation, where you may not understand and a mistake is made. A CYP expect adults to set examples and not make mistakes. CYP’s learn from adults.
To develop a relationship with CYPs’ and Adults’ you use your communication. You need to be able to build trust and respect, and this is done through communicating. Every relationship is different and unique. Some people respond better with literal language. Some CYP’s and adults may need a visual prompt. Some may struggle to read facial expression or understand a tone’s of voice. With difficulties in understanding a CYP could think that you are being aggressive or passive. You should always be clear and precise when communicating, so information is not misunderstood. It is essential to relay feedback and to understand your method of communication when developing your relationship with CYP and Adults.
It is important to keep within your professional boundaries at all times. Learning not to get caught up in the emotions and learn to detach from the CYP’s and adults you work with or in close proximity. Build respect by showing respect. This is achieved by being a positive role model, setting boundaries and expectations. You should be considerate so no one gets hurts and there are no bad feelings. Doing all these you should be able to develop a relationship with a CYP and Adult.

Give an explanation of the principles of relationship building with CYP and Adults.
Principles are a law or rules that have to be or are usually followed. This helps the effectiveness and learning when building a relationship. When building an effective relationship with a CYP and Adult you need to be successful by forming a positive and functional relationship, rules and expectations should be firmly understood. When working with a CYP and adults it is beneficial for their development to be consistent and have routine and structure. When there are changes and differences this can lead to a breakdown of trust and respect. This can have an effect on behaviour and anxieties. This leaving you in a vulnerable situation and you will need to do some relationship building and repairing. If you are a good role model by leading by example and adhere to all policies and regulations. You will creative a positive relationship.
The principles of building a relationship with an adult are to learn your roles and position of other’s. Building relationships with adults’, colleagues, family members and parents it is important to stay positive and mutually respectful of each other, or it can lead to a breakdown in communication and bad feelings making it harder to resolve.
