Our body senses tell us how we are orientated. From the sense of touch to the sense of hearing, it makes us function. The movement comes from a sense organ in our body. It is located in the inner ear and with tiny individual receptors it spreads throughout the body. Without our senses, we would not stand upright, move straight, or feel the miserably cold weather warning us to wear a jacket (Lahey 137). Numerous people are born blind or deaf all the time and function on a day-to-day basis without one of their five senses. Luckily for me, I was born with all five and take advantage of using them daily. If, for some odd reason, I were forced to lose one of my senses, I would choose to lose taste.
Though I am being forced to lose a sense in this scenario, many people have lost taste due to other conditions. Taste can be lost from upper respiratory or middle ear infections, radiation therapy for cancer, exposure to certain chemicals like pesticides or medications, head injury, some surgeries to the ear, nose, and throat, or poor oral hygiene and dental problems (Taste Disorders). Losing taste would result in not being able to detect spoiled foods or liquids or, for me, not being able to detect certain foods I am allergic to which could in fatally. Also, loss of taste in rare occasions could result in serious health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, a stroke, or other illnesses requiring someone to stick to a certain diet.
