Background KFC was started by Harland Sanders in his 60’s. He was born in 1890 in Indiana and his father died when he was 6. He had to take care of his brother and sister while his mom worked all day. This included preparing food for them and by age 7 he was apparently already a very good cook.
He dropped out of school when he was 15 and started doing various odd jobs including working on a far, time in the army, stoking steam engines of trains, selling tires, selling insurance and even operating a ferry boat.
In 1930, at the age of 40, he bought a service station in Kentucky and started to also serve food to his customers. Soon his place became so popular for its food that he got rid of the gas pump and changed his business to a full restaurant. His Clearly they need to get a lot more people to contribute toward their program if they intend to keep increasing the number of children they are able to feed. In future years they will need to relook the contribution they need to ask customers for to ensure long term sustainability of their program. And they will need to actively drive their campaign with new and innovative ideas to ensure continued support of the program. They also have several environmental sustainability initiatives. KFC has started rolling out its sustainable building program across their numerous outlets. Their goal is to build all new restaurants to be Leadership in energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certifiable, and to reduce energy consumption by 15%.
KFC has also created a recycling program for glass, plastic, aluminium, cardboard, paper and more. They have switched lighting to energy efficient CFL or LED bulbs. They have implemented a green cleaning policy. They have also created a program to purchase recycled-content paper products.
