Part 1: The world of Jesus

Jesus’ world included people of different religions, cultures, and people who spoke different languages.

People in Jesus’ time thought the world had always been as it was and that it would always be the same in the future.

The land was rocky and arid making it hard to grow crops.

The Romans were brutal conquers they especially hated Jews and Christians.

The word ‘El’ when found in biblical literature is always a reference to God.

Women, children, and infants were seen as throwaway, not important, members of society

What does it mean to believe that everything is a limited good?

Jesus did not think of himself as an individual,

Jesus was Jewish, but the Jewish religion of his time is different than modern Judaism.

Two of the sects within the New Testament are the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

The Romans expected people to worship the Caesar as a god.

The city of Rome burned about 30 years after Jesus' lifetime.

Nero blamed the Christians for burning the city of Rome.

The Jewish people revolted against the Romans.

The Romans destroyed the city of Jerusalem and the Jewish temple in 70 CE.

Jesus most likely spoke: Aramaic, Hebrew, Greek, and Latin
