Stress can be the root cause of psychological disorders, Name four symptoms shared by acute and posttraumatic stress disorders.
1. Re-experiencing the traumatic event: Nightmare’s or re-experiencing events that had occurred that were not pleasant such as reoccurring thoughts, memories, and dreams. A few relive the events through flashbacks. ( Clark 2005)
2. Avoidance: People that usually avoid activities that remind them of the traumatic events and will try to avoid related thoughts, feelings or conversations.( Marx & Sloan, 2005)
3. Reduced responsiveness: Feeling alone, thinking about things that had great meaning before. Disassociation or psychological separation’s and lack of memory.
4. Increased arousal, anxiety, and guilt: People with these disorders may feel overly alert (hyper- alertness), be easily startled, have trouble concentrating, and develop sleep problems. ( Breslau et al.., 2005) They feel extreme guilt about surviving the traumatic event while other did not. You may see this disorder long after they come back from war.
What life events are most likely to trigger a stress disorder?
Many soldiers come home from the war and suffer PTSD. This can happen right away or it could start years after the traumatic period is over. There are many events that could trigger a stress disorder such as, family, health, work, school, marriage, war, depression, illness, and divorce and death of a love one. With that said natural disasters are also responsible for triggering stress disorders along with victimization, and terrorism.
Traumatic events do not always result in a diagnosable psychological disorder. What factors determine how a person may be affected by one such event?
Certain factors such as biological, genetics, personality, childhood experiences, and social support .The severity of trauma helps to determine how a person may be affected by an event that could potentially cause stress disorders. Other possible factors
