To Whom It May Concern,
My name is Fernando Vargas. I am a scientist working with Adult Stem Cells in the CERN Laboratory in Switzerland. I am here for you to listen to this one request. That is for you to provide funds for Adult Stem Cells ONLY. I believe that Embryonic Stem Cells are an unnecessary loss of life in the scientific research community. I am here to not only take a stand in ethical controversies, but also in what is for the good of science.
Adult stem cells are a benefit to science. Stem cells are an undifferentiated cell of a multicellular organism that is capable of giving rise to indefinitely more cells of the same type, and from which certain other kinds of cell arise by differentiation. They are the body’s toolbox. They are used when normal injuries or wear is put on the body, but they can also be used to help people with heart attacks, and if put more research into, stem cells could help out patients with brain damage. In the process of using adult stem cells, there is no need for an unnecessary loss of life. At this moment, scientist do not have the ability and availability to grow the cells in the amounts needed for treatments. More work and money is needed to invest into this type of research. Adult stem cells are a better way of using and obtaining stem cells because when stem cells are taken from embryos, then the embryo is usually left to die which causes many controversial topics. When we do have access to obtain as many adult stem cells as needed, we will be able to cure patients with diseases. But first there are multiple hurdles that must first be overcome. One example is the availability of the adult stem cells. Such adult stem cells would need somehow to be isolated, expanded, and then efficiently reprogrammed onto a new pathway of differentiation if they were to be used to treat patients. This extra reprogramming step makes the development of specialized cells from adult stem cells more complicated than from embryonic stem cells.
Although stem cells are hard to obtain, they have been found in brain tissue, bone marrow, some blood vessels, skin, teeth, liver, and the skeletal muscle. This means that there are many stem cells in your body, but there needs to be more research in order to find an efficient way to grow them in multitude so that they can benefit the society. The uses of adult stem
Written Assignment 2: Biology and Technology in the Real World Addresses course outcomes 2 and 3: • use knowledge of biological principles to ask relevant questions about the natural world • make observations and discriminate between scientific and pseudoscientific explanations 1. Select one of the following topics below. 2. Find articles related to the topic. 3. Write two pages, double spaced, excluding references. You must read the articles that you find and summarize the information…
Zoller 3/5/2013 Assignment 1 Cultural Biology The existence of the stem cell was proven in 1961. Since the discovery stem cell research, useful applications remain a large focus in the biomedical world. Doctors have been performing bone marrow stem cell transplants for decades. But when scientists learned how to remove stem cells from human embryos in 1998, both excitement and controversy ensued. (NIH) The excitement is due to the huge potential these cells have for curing human…
Why We Study the Cell and Its Components Kimberley Gonzalez BIO 1020 Professor Catherine Raven South University Online Why We Study the Cell and Its Components When I first thought about the title for this assignment, I thought to myself “we study cells because that’s a scientist’s job”. After I started doing the research to find out why scientists study cells, it became so much clearer to me. We study the cell and its components because when we learn more about cells we can attempt to…
English 4, honors - Argument Research Paper The purpose of this paper is to incorporate the skills you have developed throughout this course, develop new skills in research, and prepare for college-level writing assignments. For this assignment, you will: Generate your own topic based on a controversial issue stemming from your reading of Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. You can go in-depth about an issue of bio-ethics, social conditioning, technology, artificial substances and/or abuse, or…
Jerry King Paper assignment 3 Chapters 23-25 Chapter 23 is titled Endcrine emergencies. The content in this chapter begins by looking at the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system followed by explaining assessment strategies in caring for patients having endocrine emergencies. Lastly, ch.23 provides us with information regarding the pathophysiology, assessment, and management of specific Endocrine emergencies. Chapter 24 is titled Hematologic emergencies. The content in this chapter…
P1) Components of a cell – There are many different parts to a cell. There is a nucleus which is a small circle and contains genetic information including DNA. It also contains what happens in the cell. The cell also contains a plasma membrane which is the outside of the cell. It is made up of a Hydrophilic (which attracts water) and Hydrophobic structure (which repels water) and allows things in and out of the cell. Next, there is the mitochondrion which is where the chemical reactions take place…
The Positive Relationship Between Science and Religion Introduction: Throughout history we can find many instances where religion was strongly opposed to scientific research. For example, the Catholic Church’s objection to Galileo’s defense of Copernicus’ heliocentric model where he offered his observations that he felt furthered the theory that the planets revolved around the Sun. At that time, the belief that the Holy Scriptures were perhaps inaccurate was one thing, but attempting…
HSP 3N1: Anthropology/Psychology/Sociology Essay Assignment Quinton Hunter “Future of Humanity” The future of humanity could possibly behold anything. And the fate of our lives is completely unknown, but could be completely subtle. The way that science has been advancing, our fate could be caused by genetic engineering. Our society could collapse because of cloning. Cloning is copying DNA data, and recreating a living thing to a replica of the original, both in appearance and traits. Cloning…
Biology Assignment 6 The human body has natural protection which is called the immune system. This acts to prevent or exclude harm by pathogens. The human body is often described as being 'at war'. By this, it is meant that the body is constantly under attack from things that are trying to do it harm. These include toxins, bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses. All of these can, under the right conditions, cause damage and destruction to parts of the body and if these were left unchecked…
completion of this module the student will be able to: 1. Explain the theoretical basis of the formation, structure and function of haemoglobin and the blood cell series. 2. Describe the theoretical basis of anaemia and haemostasis 3. Perform screening tests to assess the haemostatic status of an individual 4. Recognise microscopic features of blood cells in health and disease 5. Describe the procedures employed to confirm diagnosis of a range of haematological malignancies. 6. Describe the inheritance,…
