Main Characters – Luke Skywalker Introduced in the 1977 film Star Wars, the character represents the hero archetype who is "the young man, called to adventure, the hero going out facing the trials and ordeals, and coming back after his victory with a boon for the community". In the Empire Strikes Back Luke Skywalker, portrayed by Mark Hamill is identifiable by his signature brown Justin Beiber-esk hair( from before Justin got on the downward spiral bandwagon), assumes the role of protagonist in the fifth episode. In this episode he is lieutenant commander in the Rebel Alliance and in command of a fighter squadron. Essentially, the whole episode leads to a lightsaber match with Darth Vader, Luke being no match for Vader gets his arm severed and is then told that he is Luke’s father, with this epiphany, Luke is proposed to join the dark side but chooses to die than become corrupted and throws himself into a deep reactor chasm. However, he is sucked into a garbage chute to the underside of Cloud City and left hanging onto a weather vane. Leia Organa, flying away from Cloud City in the Millennium Falcon, senses Luke's peril and turns the ship around to save him. Aboard the medical ship after rejoining the rebel fleet, Luke's missing hand is replaced with a prosthetic one.

5. The Key Relationship – Luke and Vader The relationship present between this pair can be simply labelled: tense. Besides the fact, the two are enemies set on making either the dark side or the light side ruler of the universe, there is a type of romanticism among the two. Though both have adopted the role as protagonist and antagonist, the relationship becomes instinctively complicated and tense when it is revealed Vader is Luke's father. At this point, when Luke decided to fall rather than join the dark side Vader accepts this as his demise. As if that was the only opportunity for Vader to accomplish that which satisfies himself.
