Spring break By: Khadija diriye My back yard in the spring turns into a magical place during the spring, beautiful flowers that where once crushed to a rotting brown once again flourish with vivid colours. The earthy smell, the coolness from the breeze, drops of water dripping from the leaves, birds singing, the quietness…. ah the quietness. The illusion is quickly broken with the ear piercing screams coming in through the windows, bringing me reluctantly back to reality. The earthly scent was replaced by the smell of something burnt, and thick clouds of smoke masked the enchanting light.
I raced towards the house just in time to see a chaotic mess of burnt leaves and paper on the stovetop. Just in front of it was my little brother reading one of his wizardry books that had those little spell ingredience he couldn’t even read. I snatched the book from his hand, turned off the stove and took a moment to recover from the mini heart attack I got from the mile high flame that was practically licking the ceiling. “Who turned on the stove for you?”. Before I continue on with this story, I’d like to explain the extent of the damages done to the dainty kitchen. The ceiling has turned mercury gray and a combination of dark and light brown halo surrounded the area behind the stove, a hectic mess of burnt leaves covered the sink, floor and stove top.
