The content addressed in the lesson is graphing in Math. This lesson will show students how to use data to create a tally chart and a bar graph. Audience
This lesson is intended for the second grade class at Annunciation Catholic School located in the northwest area of Washington DC. Fifteen students will be involves in learning this lesson, eleven being boys and four girls. They are an ethnically and economically diverse class. Their ability levels range from a variety of low level learners to high level leaners. There is one student who speaks very little English, and three others that are ESL.

Lesson Goals Students will collect and use data to create a tally chart and a bar graph.

Essential Questions
Why do we use graphs?

Instructional Objectives
Students will be able to construct tally charts using manipulatives and transfer their data collected onto a bar graph. 5. Materials & Tools
Small bags with assorted snacks (pretzels, goldfish, marshmallows, animal crackers and raisons)
Sorting trays
Pencils
Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
Graphic organizers (tally chart and bar graph)

6. Engagement
This lesson will be engaging for all learners because it is a hands on, interactive lesson. The students will be interested in the lesson because the lesson uses snacks that they can eat at the end of the lesson. Each student has their own snack bag. They will count each snack, tally and graph them throughout the lesson. 7. Instructional Procedures
a. Prior Knowledge Assessment:
Students work with a bar graph every day in the daily language review during their reading workshop. I will review our important vocabulary: x-axis, y-axis, tally chart, bar graph. I will also have them count the points on their “contest of the rows” chart which uses tally marks.
Graph- A diagram that shows the relationship of data in an organized form ex: bar graph or pictograph
Title- The name of the graph
Tally mark- A line symbol used to record information
Tally chart- A form used to collect and display data using tally marks x-axis - The line on a graph that runs horizontally (left-right) through zero. y-axis - The line on a graph that runs vertically (up-down)

b. Introductory Motivating Activity “The Catch”: Ask students if they have ever seen a tally chart before. Ask why we use a tally chart in our classroom. Ask why they might use a tally chart when working on math problems. Remind students that the snacks are for our math time, and not to eat any of the snacks. It is important to have all the information for our data. I will pass out the bags of snacks. Ask students to describe the snacks (salty, crunchy, healthy, color etc.). Let students look at the snacks for a minute.

c. Teach and Model:
I will pass out sorting trays and ask students to sort their snacks in the different sections of the tray. After sorting their snacks I will have them count how many of each snack they have. I will pass out the graphic organizer packet (tally chart and bar graph). I will direct students to look at the tally chart. I will review the correct way to record tally marks (by 5s - 4 ticks and a diagonal). We will
