SLAP IN THE FACE-BOOK
PARENTS: Have you had “the talk” with your teen yet?
No, I don’t mean that talk. But there’s another issue that is just as important in today’s society. It is ever parents worst “web” nightmares, I’m referring to the talk about predators and staying safe on social networking sites such as face book.
Kids use the internet for hours upon hours each week. They can navigate their way very easily around the web, using it to complete assignments, play games and engage in social networking, but just because kids know a lot about using the internet, does not mean that they know a lot about internet safety.
Social networking, by definition, seems harmless, but there are a lot of hidden dangers and parents of young teenagers are dangerously kept in the dark by their children on face book and other cyber social networks. We love it, we hate it, but we can’t live without it. Face book is the largest, free social networking site with over 900 million users as of may 2012. With so many people having access to face book, it makes you wonder about just how many of them use social networking for the right reasons. According to the College of Ivanhoe Grammar there are approximately 5,000,000 suspected predators surfing the internet.
Online predators are most commonly adults who use various techniques to establish a close relationship with young users of the web. They typically pose as a young person and take their time in befriending minors and gathering personal
to his music. JAMES (scrolls through the songs) What should I do? He picks a song. He takes out a book. JAMES couldn't believe it. Out of all the days, it had to be today. He was excited to go visit his friend. They are suppose to go to a concert to see their favorite band. He sighs. He opens the book and begins reading. He looks up and sees the MAN sleeping. He looks back to his book. He looks back up and sees a GIRL with her FRIEND. They look like they're in an intense conversation. He turns…
more symbols and metaphors than I did the first time, while realizing that the characters bring much more meaning to the book, and that every character has a purpose. At first read, you would obviously point out that a time watch, and evrything found in the tree is a symbol for something. you may not know exactly what for, but everything is a symbol. In the foster book, he tells us that most every significant object is a symbol, and that there isn't always one definite answer. For example…
her. “50-10-5”. Why on earth would you put in those numbers when you JUST said my secret out loud? She corrected herself and opened me up. Usually, students wash me out before putting their clutter inside of me, not this chick. She thrust all of her books into me. It reminds me of when you try to pour four gallons of liquid into a three gallon bucket. That’s right. It’s not possible. I began as a small amount of metal alloy. The locker manufacturer made me a fresh new bright blue locker. All of the…
Fahrenheit 451 What are firemen known for? Most would say putting out fires, but in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 that's not the case. In this book the firemen are the ones who start the fires. Beatty isn't really a bad guy he just follows the role of his job and what society tells him to do. The other side of it is that Beatty is pretty mean and will do anything and everything to get the job done. Beatty was tired of being this old mean man and tired of his job, he knew he wanted to die and used…
through hoops. When your boss calls you aside and hands you a giant yellow-orange envelope, it’s usually not for a good reason. Unfortunately, I received that fate June 2014. This was the second layoff that happened in a matter of months and a slap in the face no one saw coming. My last day would be in July, so I had about a month to decide what to do. My situation deemed me a dislocated worker; my job, shipped overseas. The state offers full funding for an approved academic major as a dislocated…

the exponentially growing hatred between the two families. Similar to A Thousand Splendid Suns, Nana, Mariam and Laila uses the strength of love and loyalty to face women discrimination. In Khaled Hosseini's novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, the strength of love and loyalty is what help the Afghan women to endure the hardships they have to face in Afghanistan during the time of discrimination against women. Mariam endures many hardships during her twenty seven years of marriage with Rasheed before…
Andrew Comer 2/17/14 “Gatsby” Classic Essay Position: “The Great Gatsby” is a classic because of its still relatable content, standing the test of time, and its unceasing popularity with readers even today. Since its debut in 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s groundbreaking novel about the rigidness of time, society’s blindness to reality, and the downright satirical nature of a dream, has captivated audiences worldwide, as it has been translated into 42 languages such as “El Gran Gatsby”…
Diary of a Perseverant Boy; would people buy the book? Probably not; but why would they not buy the book with such an honest title. In this society, we focus too much on the people who are successful, and feel like we are unable to help a person who fails. If you fail, you are funny or amusing; it’s why Seinfeld and Charley Brown seem so humorous, but depressing to people like myself. If I were in a Peanuts cartoon, I would slap Lucy in the face for saying not only terrible things to Charley Brown…
After spending 15 minutes finding my way around the unfamiliar school I grab my books for the first class of the day and head towards the classroom. I step into the room and scan over the people sitting on tables talking and being loud. I spot a desk at the back where nobody is and take a seat. While waiting for the class to start I observe the people who I will share the class with. This class is full of girls who faces are covered with make-up and the short skirts, the guys who think they are better…
