INTRODUCTION
Most people have a basic understanding of nutrition in terms of fats and sugars. Though common terms like carbohydrates and lipids are seen and heard frequently through various media and advertising, the standard definitions are rarely discussed. This week, the basics of nutrition as well as physical fitness and weight management are explored. Remember that weight loss programs involve understanding how nutrients act in your body and that physical fitness plays a supporting role. Further, many diseases are the result of extreme eating habits that endanger your health both physically and mentally.
THIS WEEK IN RELATIONSHIP TO THE COURSE AND THE PROGRAM
Nutrition, physical fitness, and weight management are all interrelated. U.S. citizens expect optimum health without paying attention to all three of these elements. Optimally, you should look at how all three elements support each other. Good nutrition means paying attention to fulfilling the basics of good nutrition in terms of six elements: water, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, minerals, and vitamins. Abusive or extreme eating habits are called eating disorders. The current diagnostic criteria are defined by the American Psychiatric Association (APA): The three APA-defined disorders examined are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder (Donnatelle, 2011). In terms of physical fitness, you focus on the five components of physical fitness, which include body composition or ratio of lean to fat tissue.

To maintain your health while considering the six dimensions, this week focuses on your intake of energy and nutrients while balancing physical fitness and weight management. It is not always as easy as it seems. In applying a physical fitness routine, you often ignore that your body needs special nutrition, and that your diet should be modified in concert with your choice of a physical fitness program.
The types of physical fitness and the quantity and quality of nutrition are interdependent. If these are not in balance, then weight management becomes more difficult. Physical fitness is often thought of in terms of only two aspects: cardiorespiratory fitness (aerobics) and muscular strength.
