Abstract

The topic I would like to discuss more in depth would be on the benefit of separating sexes in the educational atmosphere. Three reasons why this would be helpful would be that it would keep the students focused on their work instead of trying to impress the opposite sex, boys and girls learn better from different teaching methods which could be applied better if they were separated, and it gets students to answer more questions confidently. Although it has many benefits, some may try and oppose it because they feel boys and girls should be treated equally and allowed to socialize with each other so they will be able to work together later in life. By separating students according to their gender, it keeps them focused, uses the method of teaching best suited for the gender, and become more confident which overall helps students to receive better grades

Same Sex Education

The purpose of sending a child to school is to give them a better opportunity to succeed in life. The goal of the school then should be to help the child apply themselves to the best of their ability to reach the full capacity of their knowledge and to set them up with a chance to get ahead in the next step whether it be more education or work. Why then, do schools not do everything they can to make it so their students can reach that goal. It may seem like they do but there is another step that can be taken to help them do better. Schools can separate students and teach boys and girls in separate classes. By separating students according to their gender, it keeps them focused, uses the method of teaching best suited for the gender, and become more confident which overall helps students to receive better grades. By separating genders, it keeps the students focused on their work instead of trying to impress the opposite gender. If students are not busy trying to impress each other they will be listening to the teacher more. Boys will not be as rambunctious and loud because all the will be doing is getting themselves into trouble, it will not draw the attention of any females as their primitive instincts might lead on for potential mates. Girls will be less likely to focus on what they wear to school and how they act because there will be nobody for them to impress. When students share a classroom it is instinctual for them to behave in a way to attract the opposite gender, and it is not even something they are aware they are doing. With less to distract them, the students will be able to learn more and get better grades. When separated by gender, teachers can apply the learning method appropriate for the gender they are teaching. Some people may say it does not matter and that students learn the same regardless but some of 550 schools (as of December 2009) noticed that boys and girls learn better differently. David Holthouse summarized: “SSPE doctrine calls for teachers in male classrooms to be constantly moving and speaking in a loud voice, even to the point of shouting, while teachers in female classes should be still and use a calming tone. This differentiation stems from the central tenet of SSPE ideology that young males thrive on competition and confrontation, while young females require a more nurturing and cooperative learning environment.”
The SSPE stands for Single Sex Public Education. They are a group which specifically studies the effects of teaching genders separately in school and have been doing so for about ten years. Those are drastically different methods of teaching so it is understandable that the students would need to be separated in order for it to be effect and allow for students to do better in school. If students are separated by their gender, they may also have topics more directed to something that resonates with them.
