INTRODUCTION
Currently valued at $414 million, the Colorado Rockies are owned by Charles and Richard Monfort, who bought the team in 1992 for $95 million. Charles (or Charlie) Monfort is a University of Utah alumnus, graduating in 1982 with a Bachelor’s degree in business management. On the field, the Rockies did not get much of a bang for their buck in 2011. A season after reaching the playoffs, the Rockies went 73-89, coming in third in the NL West, despite increasing their payroll by $7 million, to $84 million. In the midst of a season gone wrong, the Rockies made a seismic trade. They shipped Ubaldo Jimenez, who set franchise records for wins and ERA and threw the franchise's first-ever no-hitter in 2010, to the Indians for four youngsters. The two biggest prizes from this trade were first-round picks Drew Pomeranz and Alex White, who finished the season in the big league rotation and should resurface there at some point in 2012. Buoyed by strong attendance last season (2.9 million fans was the biggest crowd since 2001 season), the Rockies are bumping payroll further after locking up some core players. Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki signed a deal in the fall that added 7-years and $134 million to his existing contract that should keep “Tulo” in Denver through 2020. He has finished fifth in the MVP voting each of the past two years. Pitcher Jorge De La Rosa signed a 2-year, $21.5 million extension as well.

HISTORY
The following is a brief summary of the history of the Colorado Rockies baseball club.

• 1990 o Advisory committee formed by then-Governor of Colorado Roy Romer to recruit an ownership group for a new Denver-based baseball team. • 1991 o July 5th, the National League approved Denver and Miami as sites for two expansion teams to being play in 1993. • 1992 o Jerry McMorris, Oren Benton and Charlie Monfort acquire all of the interests previously owned by non-Coloradoans. • 1993 o Rockies join the National League along with a Southern Florida franchise, now known as the Florida Marlins. o The Rockies first pick in the expansion draft was David Nied from the Atlanta Braves. He pitched four seasons for the Rockies. o First Rockies game was played on April 5, 1993, against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium. • 1995 o Games are moved from the Mile High Stadium to the newly built Coors Field. o Rockies win their first Wild Card berth in the MLB playoffs. • 1997 o Dick Monfort becomes vice chairman, joining his brother, Charlie, who has been with the organization since 1992. • 2005 o Charlie and Dick Monfort, two former ConAgra executives, become the sole owners of the Rockies franchise.
