Abstract Different parenting styles can have an influence on a preschool aged child’s social emotional development. Social emotional development begins as soon a child enters the world. It plays an important part in a child’s developmental process. This case study examined the correlation between three different parenting styles: authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive and effect it had on a preschool aged child’s social emotional development. This study will show the positive and negative behaviors related to social emotional development. It will also discussed the delayed social emotional development.

Introduction
Early childhood education plays an important role in the social emotional development of preschool aged child’s social emotional development. It is a positive program which promotes social skills among young children. In fact, research suggest that social behavioral competencies are as important for children’s later success as are their early cognitive skill (Heckman, 2006; Raver & Zigler, 1997). The social emotional development of a preschool aged child’s contributes to the aspect of a child’s life. A child’s social emotional development begins with the parents. Parenting plays an important role in how each child develops emotionally and socially. The way a child begins to understand who they are solely depends upon their parents. The study will be based on three different parenting styles which includes authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive. I will address the positive and the negative behaviors of each style. Authoritative parent tends to be demanding and responsive toward their children. They encourage their children to be independent while still placing control and limits on the things that they are doing. They are attentive to their children needs and concerns. Authoritarian parents tend to be strict. They are demanding and not responsive. Permissive parents tend to place few demands and controls on their children. They are lenient. Many children are faced with social and emotional developmental challenges everyday. At this point, sometimes the child will be referred to the family doctor, a school official, or a mental health provider. Given this position, the mental health provider will be able to provide the appropriate mental health support to the child. This is why this study is so crucial to counseling.

Understanding the developmental social emotional skills is important in mental health counseling. A child cannot properly grow without developing socially and emotionally first. Parenting plays an important role in the developmental growth stage of a child. The social emotional development of a preschool aged child’s can be influenced in so many ways. Social-emotional competence operates along a continuum and is influence by a number of major factors, including social opportunities, contexts in which social interactions occur, and peer, familial, and cultural characteristics (Guralnick, 2010; Odom et al., 2008). Children who have appropriate and effective social-emotional competence are able to negotiate complex social contexts with appropriate interaction skills and are effective in achieving their personal goals.
