HADES

Hades is the god of the underworld and wealth. He is t he god of the dead but not of death itself. Hades rules the dead, assisted by various demonic helpers, such as Thanatos and Hypnos, the ferryman Charon, and the hound Cerberus. Many heroes from Greek mythology have went into the underworld, either to question the dead or trying to free them. Although Hades does not allow his subjects to leave his domain, on several occasions he has granted permission, such as when Orpheus requested the return of his beloved Eurydice. ( Article “Hades”). He has a helmet that made him invisible given to him by the Cyclopes. He never leaves the underworld. He’s terrible and has no pity for anyone. Hades is a son of Chronus and Rhea, and a brother of Zeus and Poseidon. He was married to Persephone, the daughter of Demeter. Hades watchedover funerals and defended the right of the dead to be buried. Hades was also the god of the hidden wealth of the earth. Hades was devoured chronus as soon as he was born, along with Zeus and Poseidon. Zeus caused the Titans to disown them, and together they drove the Titan gods from heaven and locked them away. When Hades, Zeus, and Poseidon drew lots for the division of the cosmos, Hades received the third portion was the underworld, which was his domain. (Greek Mythology). Other names include Clymenus which means notorious, Eubuleus which means well-guessing, and Polydegmon which means who receives many. (Encyclopedia Mythica). Hades abducted Persephone because he longed for a lover and was lonely. Hades desired a bride and begged his brother Zeus to give him one of his daughters. The god offered him Persephone who is the daughter of Demeter. However, knowing that Persephone would resist marriage, he turned to an abduction of the girl. When Demeter heard of this, she was furious and caused a great tragedy upon the earth until her daughter was returned to her. Zeus was forced to take back what he told Hades for the sake of the world. So he brought her back from the underworld. Hades knowing that she would not agree to marriage he tricked her to eat a pomegranate which symbolizes marriage. Since she had tasted the pomegranate, she was forced to return to him for six months. When he carried off Persephone from the upper world, he rode in a golden chariot led by four black immortal horses. Besides the horses he was also believed to have herds of ox in the underworld and on the island of Erytheia. ( Greek Mythology). Like the other gods, he was not a faithful husband. The Furies are his daughters. The nymph Mintho was changed by Persephone into the plant
