The Jameson Annex, is known to be the South Dakota State Penitentiary (SDSP). It started housing inmates in 1993’s. This facility was originally a Medium security facility. Until they extended additional space for maximum-security inmates. The security levels within this penitentiary are maximum, medium and minimum security. The SDSP main facility is made up of three housing units within a secured perimeter, and outside of perimeter is Unit C, known as the minimum security unit.
The SDSP increased the need for security, such as perimeter alarms. By installing an Electro-fence that is a visual and physical intruder restraint system, that deters an inmate from crossing a boundary. So when a person is both touching the fence wire and the ground during a pulse, it then will complete an electrical circuit and will conduct the pulse, causing an electric shock to flow through the body. Although some fences might contain barbed wire or woven wire. Video surveillance is a huge part of security in penitentiaries; within different areas, all of them are require closed circuit monitoring, so when the officers are not around or making their daily checks, the entire facility will still be monitored. Now day’s penitentiaries have something that’s a radio frequency identification tracking bracelet; it allows the security guards to keep track of the inmates movement at all times, within the facility.
