Human cloning has been debated, ever since Dolly the sheep was successfully cloned in 1996. However people fear human cloning because they don’t know the impact or consequences cloning may have on society. Society has the misconception that cloning is copying an entire human being, which in fact it is not because there are different methods to cloning. Human cloning can have many different benefits including, eliminating defective genes, creating organs, and solving infertility in couples. It is clear that the benefits outweigh the assumed possible social consequences; therefore human cloning should be embraced and not banned.
First of all, let’s get into what the process of cloning exactly is. It is easy for someone that is uneducated on the matter to say that cloning is simply the creation of a copy of another human being. However, there is more to cloning than just creating a replica. The method used in cloning is called “Somatic Nuclear cell transfer", put simply, it is when the female egg cell’s DNA is replaced with different DNA from another cell. The nucleus, which contains the DNA, is removed and then it is replaced with the nucleus of another person. It is then implanted into a surrogate mother, which is the same process of in-vitro fertilization (Process of Cloning). This is called reproductive cloning. The only difference between a cloned baby and that of a baby created naturally is that he or she would share the same DNA as someone else, like identical twins, but they would be much younger.
In contrast, therapeutic cloning is “Cloning designed as therapy for a disease. In therapeutic cloning, the nucleus of a cell, typically a skin cell, is inserted into a fertilized egg whose nucleus has been removed. The nucleated egg begins to divide repeatedly to form a blastocyst. Scientists then extract stem cells from the blastocyst and use them to grow cells that are a perfect genetic match for the patient. The cells created via therapeutic cloning can then be transplanted into the patient to treat a disease from which the patient suffers”( Therapeutic Cloning). In other words, it is when cells are taken from an embryo and are controlled to make specific functioning organs or tissue.
Like most things, people fear what they do not know, which is why people fear this process. They fear that tyrants might abuse this process by creating an army of themselves. However, " A clone will not inherit any of the memories of the original person ... a clone is not a Xerox copy or "double" of a person, just a much younger identical twin."(Vere). Time would be working against this so called army, and it would take years for this cloned army of tyrant babies to grow into adults
The CDC states that 6.7 million women ages 15-44 in the U.S have an impaired ability to get pregnant or carry a baby to term and 3.3-4.7 million men ages 45 and younger reported seeing infertility doctors and of those men 18% were diagnosed with a male-related infertility problem. “If doctors could make many identical copies of an embryo, they could avoid having to give women powerful drugs, month after month, to force their ovaries to pump out multiple eggs so that they could fertilize them and create as many embryos as possible, to increase the woman's chances of pregnancy. It would be much less expensive and much easier for a woman to have one or two embryos multiplied than to force her ovaries to produce a dozen or more eggs”(Saur). One estimate is that current infertility treatments are less than 10 percent successful. “…Couples go through physically and emotionally painful procedures for a small chance of having children. Many couples run out of time and money without successfully having children. Human cloning could make it possible for many more infertile couples to have children than ever before possible” (Smith).
